“Vilamel” is named for my grandparents house in the village of Saligao, Goa, where I spent many weekends and holidays, sitting on their Balcão, in the early morning or late evening, birdsong in the trees, chai in hand, watching the sky change colour. The lavender sachets that scented all the cupboards and my grandma’s special lemon squash made from the tree in her garden are some of the things I’ll always associate with her.
